The Story of Govatos

Govatos Chocolates is a third generation family-owned business. John Govatos, a Greek immigrant, established the family business in 1894. John opened a store at 4th & Walnut Street in Wilmington, Delaware, a small bustling city, initially selling his products under the trade name "Queen Elizabeth Chocolates."


After changing its name in 1898, Govatos Chocolates & Luncheonette relocated twice more. Third generation brothers, Nicholas and Richard Jr. have now been in the business over 50 years. A bite of our history is waiting for you!

Since 1894, Govatos Chocolates has made our chocolates fresh daily from only the finest ingredients: fresh whole milk, the finest cocoa, and smooth creamery butter. We make delicious chocolates, candies, and more right here in the shop. There is no large-scale refrigeration. The molds are dependent on the weather for drying.
